TITLE: LEAD MECHANIC
CLASSIFICATION: TRANSPORTATION - Classified Hourly Salary Schedule
REPORTS TO: TRANSPORTATION SUPERVISOR
SUMMARY: The Lead Mechanic will be responsible for all general shop operations, including the direct supervision of all shop staff members, the distribution of vehicle repair assignments & recommendation of all aspects of vehicle maintenance purchases.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Establish and maintain a good rapport with all Transportation staff and District Administration.
2. Establish daily priorities for work assignments.
3. Make recommendations for all aspects of maintenance procedures, parts and equipment purchases.
4. Oversee the work of the Auto Mechanic I and II.
5. Road test all major jobs performed by Auto Mechanic I & II.
6. Schedule non-diesel equipment for emission testing and perform emission testing on all diesel vehicles.
7. Adhere to all safety policies and procedures.
8. Respond to emergency calls such as vehicle breakdowns or accidents.
9. Perform safety checks.
10. Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
11. Perform mechanical repair work on all diesel/gasoline/propane vehicles.
12. Coordinate with parts analyst for all purchases to be made.
13. Perform repair on air condition (AC) systems on buses and white fleet and certification.
14. Perform other job related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Training in automotive, truck, and school bus maintenance and repair.
LICENSES OR CERTIFICATIONS:
Arizona Class B Commercial Drivers License and Arizona School Bus Certificate Arizona State Emission Tester Certificate
EXPERIENCE:
Five (5) years experience in diesel/gasoline/propane vehicle repairs, or certification in specified fields.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES:
• Knowledge and ability to maintain and repair all diesel/gasoline/propane vehicles.
• Knowledge of tools and equipment used to repair and maintain vehicles.
• Ability to operate hand and power tools.
• Ability to prioritize and schedule work assignments and make decisions.
• Knowledge and ability to comply with safety procedures and practices.
• A command of English is necessary to read and interpret routine information such as work schedules memos and instructions for tools and equipment and to communicate with coworkers.
• Ability to lift 100 pounds, bend, crawl under equipment, climb, push 130 pounds, reach, carry 50 pounds and have manual dexterity.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The working environment may include working outdoors and in shop/garage structures where fumes, vapors, grease, oil, noise and dust are prevalent.
TERMS OF EMPLOYEMENT:
Twelve-month year, Classified Hourly Salary Schedule, employee benefits in accordance with Board Policy.
EVALUATION:
Performance to be evaluated in accordance with Board policy on evaluation of classified staff.
