TITLE: Driver Trainer II (Bus/fleet)
CLASSIFICATION: Classified Hourly
REPORTS TO: Director of Transportaion
SUMMARY: The Driver Trainer II plays a vital role in the Roosevelt School District’s Transportaion Department by developing, coordinaing, and delivering comprehensive training programs for all school bus drivers and various fleet staff. This position ensures that all drivers are proficient in safe driving practices, knowledgeable about state and federal transportation regulations, and prepared to handle emergency situations. Additionally, the Driver Trainer evaluates driver performance, maintains training records, and promotes a culture of safety and efficiency within the transportation department. The Transportation Bus Driver Trainer reports directly to the Director of Transportation and collaborates closely with dispatchers, mechanics, and administrative staff to optimize daily transportation operations.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Design and implement training programs for new and existing bus drivers, including classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training.
2. Stay updated on the latest state and federal transportation regulations to ensure training content is current and compliant.
3. Develop specialized training sessions focusing on student behavior management, emergency response, and defensive driving techniques.
4. Conduct hands-on training with new drivers, including pre-trip inspections, proper loading/unloading procedures, and emergency evacuations.
5. Provide refresher training courses to ensure all drivers maintain high safety and efficiency standards.
6. Conduct regular assessments of bus drivers' skills through ride-alongs, performance tests, and safety drills.
7. Provide constructive feedback and recommend additional training or corrective actions as necessary.
8. Assist in the investigation of vehicular accidents, analyze causes, and develop preventive strategies.
9. Document performance reviews, training sessions, and corrective actions for compliance purposes.
10. Ensure all drivers possess the necessary certifications and licenses as mandated by Arizona state laws and district policies.
11. Maintain detailed records of driver certifications, training sessions, and compliance documents.
12. Coordinate with the Arizona Department of Public Safety for scheduling and administering required tests and certifications.
13. Assist with scheduling and overseeing third-party testing and licensing requirements.
14. Ensure compliance with drug and alcohol testing programs as required by federal and state regulations.
15. Organize regular safety meetings and workshops to reinforce best practices and address emerging concerns.
16. Develop and distribute safety materials, newsletters, and bulletins to keep staff informed and engaged.
17. Lead initiatives such as the annual "Safe Driver" awards to recognize exemplary performance.
18. Work with district administrators and school personnel to address student safety concerns related to transportation.
19. Collaborate with the Director of Transportation to identify and address training needs within the department.
20. Provide on-the-road support during peak times or driver shortages, including operating school buses as needed.
21. Assist in route planning and optimization to enhance operational efficiency.
22. Act as a liaison between transportation, school administrators, and parents regarding student transportation concerns.
23. Monitor bus drivers’ compliance with daily vehicle inspections, ensuring proper reporting of mechanical or safety issues.
24. Assist with the selection and onboarding of new drivers by participating in interviews and evaluations.
EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalent; additional coursework in transportation safety, driver education, or a related field is preferred.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:
• Valid Arizona Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.
• Arizona School Bus Driver Instructor Certification or the ability to obtain certification within one year of employment.
• Current First Aid and CPR Instructor certifications or the ability to obtain within six months of hire.
• Certified Third-Party Tester (preferred but not required).
EXPERIENCE: Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a school bus driver, with a proven record of safe driving. Prior experience in a training or supervisory role within a transportation sefng is advantageous.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES:
• In-depth understanding of Arizona state and federal transportation regulations.
• Proficient in defensive driving techniques and emergency response protocols.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to develop and maintain detailed training records.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of instructing diverse groups effectively.
• Ability to operate various school bus models and related equipment proficiently.
• Proficiency in Microsog Office Suite, transportation sogware, GPS tracking systems, and digital training platforms.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team, prioritizing tasks in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to sit for extended periods while conducting training sessions or driving.
• Capable of lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, including equipment or materials.
• Stamina to conduct multiple training sessions, sometimes in succession.
• Visual and auditory acuity to monitor driver performance and respond to emergencies effectively.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The working environment is a Combination of office settings, classroom environments, and on-the-road training.
Exposure to varying weather conditions during on-the-road assessments or driving duties.
Interaction with a diverse group of individuals, including drivers, students, parents, and school administrators.
Availability for emergency training sessions, accident investigations, or urgent transportation needs.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve-month year, Classified Hourly, employee benefits in accordance with Board policies.
EVALUATION: Performance to be evaluated in accordance with Board policy on evaluation of classified staff.
